Last night I went to an event at a cafe in town for designers. It was a meet-up of practising designers and students and a chance to meet other people in the industry. There was two speakers, a guy called Rob Mills (a content strategist GatherContent) and a woman called Laura Wellington (who established Duke Studios – a collaborative work space – in Leeds). The talk was more aimed at practising designers but it was interesting to go along and see what could be to come after graduation.
Laura Wellington’s talk was really interesting. She and her partner set up a studio workspace in Leeds in 2010 and her talk was basically about her story and how they did the build. It was really interesting to see what she had done and how she had came such a long way in only a few years. She started the business from nothing so it’s inspiring to know that there are people out there making a successful living from a business they started from scratch.
They’re planning on having more talks and more meet-ups for designers in the future so I will definitely keep an eye out as it would be interesting to here from more people about what it’s like in the industry.
